Refilling the bird feeder

My mother in law Pam has a bird feeder outside her kitchen. It attracts various birds in the neighborhood and has created an interesting bird sanctuary.

The morning on Christmas Eve, before things got busy, I sat down at the table by the window and watched the birds. It was fascinating to see them flitter frequently between the bird feeder and the trees near by. Shortly afterward, I observed that they never stopped on the bird feeder or anywhere for long. Instead of hogging the bird feeder and greedily munching as I somehow had imagined they would, they flew to the bird feeder, picked up a seed and flitted back to some branches to eat the seed. And they seemed to be repeating that same routine perpetually. Mom said that they are nervous and alert because they have to watch out for predators such as hawks, which prey through the neighborhood.

I spotted a female Cardinal as well, that was in a lighter color and not as conspicuous. Mom mentioned she has noticed different pairs of Cardinals in and out, and that the Cardinals seem to team up in pair and stay together. What an intriguing little world, that I had not discovered till then, even though it had been there every time I visited.
