Making History

Who make history? Kings, queens, heroes or eminent leaders of campaigns or movements? Leo Tolstoy didn’t think so. As he explained in War and Peace, it is the collective wills of millions of individuals. I second his point of view; a leader without follower carries no momentum.

This is particularly true for people like us, citizens of a democratic society, having the right to vote, freedom of political expression, freedom of speech and freedom of the press. These privileges come with responsibility, the responsibility to participate exercising our principles, values and intellect to the best of our ability.

Tolstoy wrote: “The ancients have left us model heroic poems in which the heroes furnish the whole interest of the story, and we are still unable to accustom ourselves to the fact that for our epoch histories of that kind are meaningless.” More than a hundred years later, it is still true. There are still those who don’t realize his or her power and duty.

I have been voting since I became a citizen nine years ago. I am however most active this election year. There is too much at stake for our country, I couldn’t just sit and watch any longer.

There is no such thing as perfect solution. No president is going to come into the White House fully trained, that is why they have advisers, but a leader must have the right principles, values and visions, qualities that lead one to sound judgments and right decisions for the welfare of the people. Barack Obama, one of the few who opposed the Iraq war from the start, has exhibited good judgment and principles, values and visions that would lead the country into the right direction.
